About

picHello, my name is Paul Thompson, and I’m a (very!) mature postgraduate student. I have a 1st Class BA in English Literature from the Open University, and an MSc with Distinction in Literature and Modernity from the University of Edinburgh; my dissertation was on using phenomenology as a tool for literary criticism of the books of W.G. Sebald (in English translation). I’m now researching for a PhD at the University of St Andrews. Sounds impressive, but no one is more surprised than I am myself.

This blog is a depository for those things that will not necessarily get published elsewhere. I’m grateful to a friend for the title of the site – I would never have thought of that! there’s more than a touch of Pink Floyd to it.

For several years I have attended all kinds of events in Scotland, mainly literary – for example I have been a regular at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and StAnza Poetry Festival – but also drama, comedy, and music, for the purpose of writing for an established review web site. I am now no longer part of that team, but continue as a freelance. From summer 2019 I will be posting my reviews on this blog, but I also offer my services to other web sites and publications who would like me to undertake something on their behalf, subject to my availability. For that purpose, and for any communication outside of comments on posts, please email taxonomydomine{a}gmail.com.

I shall also be inviting contributions, especially reviews of literary events, from colleagues.

My policy on ‘recycling’ etc.
As this blog is not, strictly speaking, an academic space, I take a relaxed view on what might elsewhere be considered ‘self-plagiarism’ or ‘recycling’ of text. Several of my posts here have been adapted from essays submitted earlier in my studies, because I want to share my ideas in an informal setting. I see little difference between this practice and turning a piece of academic work into a journal article, which, I am told by more than one senior academic colleague, is acceptable, and which indeed I have done. If, however, any academic establishment with which I have been associated objects to a particular post here, I will look very carefully and sympathetically at their objections. Of course I will not be recycling anything from my current research here.
